Storyline Online: Read alouds and support from actors

by / Sunday, 15 June 2014 / Published in Digital Reading

Reading aloud to children has been repeatedly shown to improve their reading, writing and communication skills, logical thinking, concentration and general academic aptitude… as well as inspire a love of reading. The Screen Actors Guild Foundation records well-known actors reading children’s books and makes graphically dynamic videos so that children around the world can be read to with just the click of a Storyline Online video book image.

Many teachers play SAG Foundation’s Storyline Online videos for their students. Doctors and nurses play Storyline Online videos for children in hospitals. And parents and children around the world watch Storyline Online videos millions of times every month.

In 2001, the SAG Foundation was given a generous grant by Verizon to create five digital videos featuring professional actors reading quality children’s books. These imaginatively produced videos fully captured the intricate illustrations, colors and textures of each book. Those initial five stories turned into an internationally recognized website that currently streams 24 stories featuring celebrity readers including Annette Bening, Hector Elizondo, Betty White, James Earl Jones, Jane Kaczmarek, Bradley Whitford, Sean Astin, Esai Morales, and Elijah Wood.

Storyline Online also features supplemental activities for each book developed by an early literacy specialist. Together, the videos and related curriculum strengthen comprehension, verbal and written skills of English language learners worldwide. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, free of charge, Storyline Online ensures that every child who has access to an Internet connection can be exposed to a story.

The only improvement we see for this site is that we want more!! We urge all actors to get involved with this wonderful way to give back! Thank you!
